About
My artwork focuses on textures and layers that tell a story. Often the story is of the art itself — the layers and layers of materials that make up the piece — but it’s just as often a half-remembered story or idea that I focus on in the piece. I'm as inspired by Greek myth as by a walk downtown, a hike through the woods, a daydream, or a news article.
Using paint, paper and wood, I start each piece by thinking of the story I want to represent, then begin making marks. I know my first layer will be covered by many others, so I’m very free with it, allowing it to emerge. Sometimes I paint a new painting over an old painting, blending and merging there stories.
I am continually drawn back to the shapes of letters, and to certain geometries, especially squares and triangles. There’s something very satisfying about turning language into visual elements. I love texture and build it up with multiple layers and different types of materials.
I aim to provide an interesting visual experience for the viewer, sketching a story in bold strokes that invite the viewer to cross the room and examine the details, layers and overlapping elements. Like footnotes, the most interesting stories are often in the smallest details.
I have been creating art my whole life, mostly as a hobby and means for self-understanding. I am a trained scientist and continue to work professionally in that field. In 2023 I began taking art classes and learned to take my art seriously . I opened a studio and have devoted myself to developing a fine arts practice.
